A milestone that sits in **In Progress** for four months with no commentary is worse than no roadmap at all. Milestone updates let you post progress notes and set a health state. ## Health states | State | Use when | | ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **On track** | Progressing as expected. | | **At risk** | Something could push the timeline: a dependency, scope, or capacity. | | **Off track** | The original expectation no longer holds. | ## Post an update Open the milestone and write an update in the feed, picking a health state as you post. Updates appear in the milestone's feed in order, so there's a readable history rather than just a current status. ### Public and private updates Each update is marked **Public** or **Private**. Private updates stay in your dashboard; public ones appear on your roadmap for customers to read. This lets you keep one honest internal thread and one customer-facing one on the same milestone, instead of maintaining the story in two places. ### Reactions Readers can react to public updates, so you get a signal on whether an update landed without asking anyone to write a comment. ## What to write Keep it short and specific. Cover: * What moved since the last update * What's blocking, if anything * What changed about the expected timing Moving something to **At risk** early costs you far less credibility than moving it to **Off track** with no warning. ## Attachments and related items Milestones can carry attachments (files or external links), and can be linked to the [release](/guides/releases/overview) that ultimately delivers them. That closes the loop between "we're planning this" and "here it is."
